When you visit Valencia, you simply can’t leave without tasting churros. These crispy, doughnut-like sticks are deep-fried to perfection and typically enjoyed with a sprinkle of sugar and a cup of thick, warm chocolate for dipping. Looking to try something different? Don’t miss the delicious variations like buñuelos. Buñuelos are fluffy pumpkin fritters or the thicker, heartier porras.

Churros

Churros are a must-try when you’re in Spain. These golden, fried dough sticks are usually made from wheat flour, though some places still use a traditional potato-based dough. You’ll find two types across the country: the classic thin churros and their thicker cousin, the porra. And here’s a sweet bonus, some porras come filled with rich chocolate or creamy custard, making them the ultimate indulgence during your trip.

Buñuelos

Buñuelos are Spain’s take on doughnuts: light, crispy, and simply irresistible. Across the country, they’re made with different recipes and ingredients, but here in Valencia, they’re often prepared with pumpkin for that unique local twist. Valencians love to enjoy a buñuelo as a sweet dessert or even for breakfast, especially during the city’s famous Las Fallas festival.

Churrerías

You might spot churros in the frozen aisle of the supermarket, but nothing beats the fresh ones. For that authentic, just-fried taste, head to a churrería! The go-to spot in Spain to enjoy churros the way they’re meant to be.

El Contraste

On Sundays and/or holidays it is very common to eat ‘churros con chocolate’ or ‘buñuelos con chocolate.’ The best way to eat them is warm with sugar and/or with warm, thick chocolate milk. During the biggest celebration in Valencia, the ‘Fallas,’ you will find on almost every corner of the city a ‘churrería’. In the district Ruzafa, there you can find a churrería that is baking fresh churros and buñuelos a few times a day. You can order a few to take away or you can have a seat at their terrace. In El Contraste, there isn’t much space inside, but there are approximately 8 tables on the terrace. At the end of the morning or beginning of the afternoon you can enjoy the sun while having a coffee with some delicious churros.

Time to Get Cooking…

Fallen in love with churros and craving that Spanish breakfast vibe back home? With this easy recipe, you can make the most delicious Spanish churros right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml water
  • 500 g flour
  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 liter olive oil for frying
  • Sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

Step 1: In a small pot, mix the water, olive oil, salt, and baking powder. Bring to a boil. Once it starts foaming, remove it from the heat and pour the mixture over the flour in a large bowl. Stir well until you get a firm dough.

Step 2: Place the dough in a piping bag or, if you have one, a churro maker.

Step 3: Heat 1 liter of olive oil in a wok or frying pan. Pipe strips of dough about 15–20 cm long into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown. Avoid frying too many at once to make sure they cook evenly.

Step 4: Remove the golden churros from the oil and let them drain briefly on a towel or paper napkin. Sprinkle generously with sugar.

Pro tip: Churros taste amazing with coffee, but nothing beats dipping them in thick, hot chocolate.
