The shape

Since 1998, L’Hemisfèric has been welcoming visitors as one of the most iconic landmarks of the City of Arts and Sciences. Its design is inspired by a giant human eye, a symbol of knowledge and surrounded by a shimmering pool of water that reflects the building like a mirror.

Locals often call it “the eye of knowledge”, and when you look closer, you’ll even spot the ‘eyelashes’ along the edges of the structure, which can open and close like a real eye. Architect Santiago Calatrava, who designed all the buildings in the City of Arts and Sciences, created this futuristic masterpiece to perfectly blend art, science, and imagination.

The building

L’Hemisfèric is one of the most striking and photographed buildings in Valencia. Santiago Calatrava’s use of glass, clean lines, and surrounding water gives it a unique, modern look that seems to change depending on the time of day. On sunny afternoons, its reflection glitters beautifully in the pool. At dusk, when the lights come on, the effect is simply magical.

Design and areas

Every part of L’Hemisfèric has its own story and purpose. The outer ring, known as the Carl Sagan Hall, honors the world‑famous American astronomer who inspired millions through his groundbreaking TV series Cosmos. This 24,000 m² space is used for events, making it a versatile and inspiring venue.

At its heart is the spectacular IMAX and 3D cinema, the largest of its kind in Spain. The impressive 900 m² screen wraps around the audience for a fully immersive experience, with three projection systems delivering sharp, breathtaking visuals. Films shown here are mostly documentaries, giving visitors the chance to explore science and nature in an unforgettable way.

The auditorium has 300 comfortable, reclining seats designed so you can lean back and enjoy the show. Depending on the film, you’ll be given a headset and 3D glasses to make the experience even more captivating.
