Nestled perfectly between Valencia and Alicante, Jávea (also written as Xàbia) shines as a jewel of the Costa Blanca. Its mild Mediterranean climate makes it a year‑round favourite, particularly for winter escapes. Add in the golden beaches, crystal‑clear waters and endless blue skies, and you’re in for the ultimate Spanish experience. Meanwhile, the historic old town brims with culture and fascinating stories waiting to be told.
Authentic Spain at its best
Just like Valencia, Jávea combines sandy beaches with a rich historical centre. Visitors can explore three distinct areas: La Villa (the old town), The Harbour, and The Beaches. Each of these offers its own unique charm and character.
La Villa
In the 14th century, pirates frequently raided Jávea by sea, leaving behind traces of those turbulent times. For example, you can still see cannonballs embedded in the walls of Iglesia de San Bartolomé, which was built to defend the town.
However, not all remnants speak of conflict. The town also flourished during these centuries, as seen in the beautiful churches, gothic architecture, vaulted doorways and whitewashed facades. Notably, many buildings feature tosca, a yellow sandstone that gives them their warm, earthy glow.
If you’d like to dive deeper into history, visit the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Soler Blasco. Here you’ll discover stories of conquests, piracy and their impact on this coastal town.
Don’t forget to stop by the lively Mercado de Jávea. Open from 8:00 in the morning, it’s perfect for coffee and people-watching. Additionally, there’s a colourful street market every week on Plaza de la Constitución.
The Harbour
Although parts of the harbour date back to the 15th century, little remains from that period. It was only in the 19th century, when the raisin trade boomed, that the harbour truly flourished. Nowadays, it’s home to fishing boats and water sports facilities. Make sure to visit the fish auction at La Lonja for a glimpse of the daily catch.
Nearby, you’ll find the strikingly modern Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Loreto. Its boat-shaped design adds a contemporary touch to the historic setting.
The Beaches
- Playa del Arenal
This is Jávea’s only sandy beach, stretching 480 metres along the Mediterranean. Thanks to its calm, shallow waters, it’s perfect for paddling or relaxing with a sea breeze, even in winter. Moreover, adventurous visitors can enjoy water sports like paddleboarding and diving further offshore. Or simply unwind with a drink at one of the many bars on the promenade. - Playa de la Granadella
Equally beautiful are the surrounding coves, tucked between cliffs and sheltered from the wind. Among them, Playa de la Granadella stands out with its intense blue water and breathtaking scenery.
How to get to Jávea
