History
Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 BC. In 711 the city came under Moorish rule, and it wasn’t until the 13th century that the Spanish regained control. Over the centuries Valencia has seen many different rulers, each leaving their mark on the city.
The 15th century was a true golden age, when Valencia flourished with the construction of stunning buildings, palaces, churches and universities. Many of these landmarks can still be admired in the historic city center today, such as the bell tower El Miguelete and the Silk Exchange La Lonja.
In the 20th century, more architectural gems were added, including the central train station and the grand market hall. A walk through the old town takes you on a journey through all these layers of history.
